How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Choose a page-number format and position, add labels to every page, and check margins before sharing the updated file.

Page numbers make a long PDF easier to discuss, print, and reference. Before adding them, decide whether numbering should follow the PDF’s physical page count or a printed page number already shown in the document. PDFPK numbers physical pages starting at 1.

Use the Add Page Numbers tool

  1. Open Add Page Numbers to PDF and select one PDF.
  2. Choose a format (such as “Page 1 of 8” or a number only) and a top or bottom position.
  3. Choose Add Page Numbers and download the new PDF.
  4. Inspect the first, middle, and last pages. Check that labels do not overlap content or fall outside the printable area.

What the tool does not change

The current tool adds labels to every page. It does not let you skip a cover page, set a starting offset, or select a page range. To change which pages are included or their order, use Delete PDF Pages or Organize PDF first.

Keep an original copy if the PDF contains forms, annotations, signatures, or other features that may not survive a page rebuild.
